Of the composers discussed in this chapter, Arlen has been the most prolific, though the contributions of Duke and Lane, particularly with respect to their work for Cabin in the Sky and Finian’s Rainbow, have ensured their lasting fame. Yet the inability of these men to continue the pursuit of their careers in the theatre with the constancy of the composers of the first three decades of the century is unfortunate. The drastic reduction in the number of musicals being produced, the length of time that it takes to prepare a musical, and the almost prohibitive cost of such a venture have all been factors resulting in the relative infrequency of their efforts on Broadway.
